Easter

Slice of LIfe
This slice is part of  the 17th annual Slice of Life Story Challenge on  Two Writing Teachers! #sol24 I’m slicing every day this month, for the 11th year! Wahoo!!! Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

When I’d wake up on Easter morning,
I’d search for jellybeans
around the house
black jelly beans on the black piano keys, that sort of thing
we weren’t
church people
not that there’s anything wrong with that
some of my favorite people
go to church

I loved the mini Cadbury eggs with the crunchy candy shell best
and the little carton of egg-shaped gum
we must have had Easter dinners somewhere
I have vague vegetarian memories of
watching people eating ham
we weren’t
ham people

I will never understand eating
ham
or lamb
especially on Easter
here, let’s celebrate life, joy, hope,
the spring
by killing this baby animal
it just doesn’t make sense
even though
some of my favorite people
eat baby animals

One year my daughter lost her tooth
the night before Easter
The Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny had to come the same night
They left a note together and I was left
wondering what other magical visitors could
come together
I guess the Tooth Fairy could meet anyone else
since teeth can fall out
any day

Some people use
Easter as a time to practice
forgiveness
but I have learned that not
everything needs to be forgiven
so I will focus on rebirth
and hope
and just a little bit of
vegan chocolate

  1. Enjoy your day tomorrow. I also loved the Cadberry eggs, they felt super decadent and special. Now, I’m also reaching for the vegan chocolate with maybe an almond or two inside.

  2. You brought me back to my Easter childhood. We were ham people (now I am not), but I also wondered about why we’d eat ham and lamb and celebrate spring baby animals. Didn’t make sense. I too found my share of black jelly jeans on the black keys of the piano. I saved them for my sister who was a licorice lover. Thank you for believing that not everything needs to be forgiven. It’s taken a lot of pressure off me! Happy Vegan Easter!

  3. I loved this so much I had to read it to my husband. I’m so glad I had my prime rib (no ham) before reading. Honestly, if I didn’t live w/ a carnivore I’d likely never eat meat. Now vegetables and meat must be my main food sources. It’s so depressing for me because fruit is my favorite thing. I think being a Cadbury Egg person is preferable to being a one Sunday a year human. Can spinach taste like chocolate? I need to research. Happy Easter! Hope to see you Tuesday.
