Snow Day Dreams
Maybe you will read your book,
and snuggle in to watch a movie.
There could be fun crafts!
Everyone will work together to clear the driveway.
No worries, you’ll be home so the house will stay clean,
the dishes will be done!
You will get caught up on your work.
The dog will be chill and
you will read some more by the fire.

Snow Day Reality
Have you ever tried to teach a 7 year old to swallow a pill?
Have you ever tried to crush prednisone into applesauce just like the doctor did at the hospital?
How many times does a kid need to throw up their medicine before you call the doctor?
Is the pharmacy open during this winter storm?
Is that rash related to the already known condition?
How much coffee is too much coffee?
Will anyone else play with the dog?
How many people will complain about the fireplace heat?
Is puffy paint a fun craft?
How much slime can 3 kids make?
How many slime batches can get messed up and thrown away?
Who will make dinner?
How much bickering can 3 kids do in one day?
When will you do your work?
Will you be able to read your book later?
Will tomorrow be a snow day?

 Allow me a complaint poem. . .

Elimination diet, I’m so tired of you
Breakfast: Coffee with almond milk
More almond (butter) in my oatmeal, and
Lunch: Veggies, with a few cashews
All day, I drink water, that’s nothing new
Salted homemade popcorn for a snack, and
Dinner: Veggies again,
With spices and some tofu
It’s fine, not a horrible thing to have to do
Such a first world problem – not a problem,
A stupid thing to complain about. But,
Elimination diet, I’m so tired of you

A slice of a piece of laundry – haiku

Slice of LIfe Part of Slice of Life by Two Writing Teachers

I notice this shirt
folding the clothing tonight
it stands for my son

He loves wearing this
message T, to school where he
practices control

Self control! Impulse!
yelling, pedantic, stubborn
loud, obnoxious some

I notice this pin
carefully clipped for safety
righteous kid, caring

Helpful! Sensitive!
standing up for his ideals
his ideas, his wants

I notice this pin
I notice this message T
I notice my son

March

I live my writerly life in March
I notice slices
slivers
poems

Conversations are lessons in March
I think, I write
I write, I think

I read stories and slices in March
I comment
reach out
connect

I live my writerly life in March

#sol16 March 29: Confession Slices

Slice of LIfe  I am participating in the March Slice of Life Challenge: A slice a day for all of March.  You should do it too!  Thank you, Two Writing Teachers! Readers, check out their site, and start slicing!

Confession Slices
This morning I rushed around, shouted that I was late
and then stopped for coffee
at my favorite place.

I hid my kids' Easter baskets in the trunk of my car
but my candy is in the cabinet
easy to reach.

Actually, the jelly beans are right here
on my desk,
very easy to reach.

I haven't finished a book in weeks
but I have started plenty
and there are books everywhere.

If I could, I'd wake up my daughter right now
and watch Gilmore girls
for a couple of hours.

I kind of miss playing King's Quest
on my old IBM
from when I was 8.

I helped my kids burn leaves
on the driveway today,
and tried to make a real fire.

I don't think this is a real slice
but I'm writing it anyway,
because it's all I have.

#sol16 March 28 The Slice you Didn’t Write

Slice of LIfe  I am participating in the March Slice of Life Challenge: A slice a day for all of March.  You should do it too!  Thank you, Two Writing Teachers! Readers, check out their site, and start slicing!

The Slice You Didn't Write

I'm the slice you didn't write
The moment you
didn't
see

You couldn't take me in

I'm one you'll
never
perceive

You skipped
right
by me

I'm the slice you didn't notice
I'm the story that doesn't belong to you
I'm the one you can't remember
I'm the slice you missed
I'm the slice you didn't write

#sol16 March 23 Tell me something good: A slice

Slice of LIfe  I am participating in the March Slice of Life Challenge: A slice a day for all of March.  You should do it too!  Thank you, Two Writing Teachers! Readers, check out their site, and start slicing!

I'm sure there's a poet's way
to write when your cat is dying
as the children head to school
and your daughter texts you:
"Mommy help us"

There must be a metaphor for
when you're too late
he's already dead
and your son begs you to say
"passed on" instead

I wish I could speak in allegory
when my daughter lies in bed
and says,
"Tell me something good, mama.
I need to hear something good."

The words keep repeating
a mantra
a poem
Tell me something good, mama I need to hear something good
Tell me something good, mama I need to hear something good

#sol16 March 22 A slice of that day

Slice of LIfe  I am participating in the March Slice of Life Challenge: A slice a day for all of March.  You should do it too!  Thank you, Two Writing Teachers! Readers, check out their site, and start slicing!

that day
that day when your son is sick
sent home
seems like strep again
dr. says watch and wait

that day
that day when you ask the
dr. to imagine he weren't a dr.
I hate that rapid strep test
you might have yelled a little bit

that day
that day when you realize you
have been giving your son the wrong
antibiotic dose
for 3 weeks

that day
that day when you call your mom to tell her
your horrible mistake
so that she will tell you
it's not big deal, it will be okay

that day
that day when you tell your mom the whole
stupid antibiotic story
and she is so nice before she says
Do you know where I am?

that day
that day when your mom is at the emergency room
with your grandpa
being a daughter, and a mom
and you wait to make sure he's okay

that day
that day when feel your own throat
getting sore
so you eat raw garlic, waiting
to hear from your mom

Celebrating with Class! And a mentor text to boot

celebrate-image

This post is part of Ruth Ayres Celebrate Link up. Thanks, Ruth for this great opportunity to celebrate!

I have 3 School Celebrations to share with you.

  1. Today I get to celebrate with my students! In fact, in a first ever turn of events, I’m celebrating on my blog while they write their first ever celebration pieces. It’s a double celebration, or maybe triple. We started by reading I’m In Charge of Celebrations by Byrd Baylor/pictures by Peter Parnall. This is a beautiful book, and I am celebrating the way the pictures and words go together to make you feel the celebration. After we read, we brainstormed things we could celebrate:

We talked about all the ways we can celebrate by writing…

  • paragraph
  • story
  • list
  • poem
  • pictures

Now we are writing. It’s quiet, which is nice. Some students are watching my writing, which is also nice. I like writing in front of my students, even though it does feel a bit odd.  A few students are still settling into the stamina of sitting and quietly writing without distracting themselves or others, which I understand. It’s September. I’m celebrating September writing!

2. This year I teach 2 ELA classes back to back. I’ve just read I’m in Charge of Celebrations for the second time this morning. Before the school year started, I thought I would be bored teaching “the same” thing two times in a row. I’d like to call a celebration for that NOT happening. I’m anything but bored. Today I got to read I’m in Charge of Celebrations TWICE! Today I got to fill my board with even more celebrations with my second class. Today I get to connect with 50 students through the power of reading and writing. I’m lucky.

3. Speaking of I’m in Charge of Celebrations. Reading a book like that 2 times in a row made it an automatic mentor text. As I read it I felt the pull to write about a celebration in the style of Byrd Baylor… Again writing in front of my students, while they write. As students finish writing a celebration, I challenge them to write again, choosing a poem this time, or a list, or a paragraph if they just did a poem. And I start thinking about celebrating my own children and their school:

Celebrating September
A school year where all 3 children go to the same school!
Thanks to Byrd Baylor's inspiration

Friends, I wish you had been there
to hear
my children,
giddy with anticipation
share the names of
reading buddies
make plans for
meeting for worship
discuss the rules
for the elevator

All three
of my babies
are not babies anymore,
I know.

All three
are in the same school now
with the chance to
be more than siblings
Yes,
It's possible to
be more
than siblings
Now they are
Schoolmates
Part of a family
and
a community.

I've decided that September is a celebration
for school.
Not just any school celebration.
I don't want a day
to
buy
more
markers and post its,
notebooks and pencils
stickers and baskets
I want a day to celebrate
that my children
get to spend
their days
in the same community
they get to
share common ground.
They get to
be more
than siblings.

I hope you have a lot to celebrate this weekend!
