Classical Time Travel

I am listening to Classical Study Music for Concentration
To try to concentrate
Only I think I had these songs on a tape I used to fall asleep to

So instead of working I am remembering
A cassette with a distinct red and blue stripe, labeled “Piano”
And a best friend

We loved to use a tape recorder to record silly things
Jokes and songs, I guess
You had to press two buttons at once to record

One day we recorded on top of the piano music
Just a little bit,
accidentally

Every time I listened to that music to fall asleep
It would click off
And switch to the loud squealing laughter of young girls

It was fast, but it worked
As time travel back to childhood – even after I moved far away
I wonder where that tape is now

  1. This post brought a smile to my face. Music has that way of opening pathways to memories in ways we can’t ever fully understand. So the idea of setting our music up for concentration, only to have us lead ourselves down a distracting chain of memories? I mean, I know I’VE been there! Thanks for bringing me some reminiscing of my own.

  2. I loved reading this post. It brings back such memories. The recording of tapes, the accidentally recording over tapes, the tape that always ended with that accidental recording…. I also really loved that second stanza, with that lovely transition between listening to music for studying and thinking about your old tape and your childhood friend.
