#sol22 March 22 A Drive on March 22

Slice of LIfe
Part of Slice of Life by Two Writing Teachers March Slice a Day Challenge! I’m slicing every day this month. Thanks for stopping by!

I’m happy I’m in a van
not a Bonneville
You oughta know

That’s what I’m thinking
as Alanis sings
and I drive

There’s a bird in the road
I wish she would move
like she’s supposed to

I look in the mirror
the bird is walking
back to where she started

Why does she like that spot
in the middle of the road?
I wonder, I worry

Alanis sings some more
I turn up the volume
Why are you so petrified of silence?

March 22 doesn’t mean
anything
anymore

  1. Awww… this is raw and succinct. I love the way you weave in the lyrics and end with an announcement. Hoping better things are ahead. May this closed door lead to opening another one…

  2. I really like the way you weave the different images together here: the bird, your drive, the Alanis lyrics. It’s like you’ve used the song as background music for the rest of it. And I’m trying to juxtapose the raw emotions of an (pretty much any) Alanis Morissette song with the bird, unperturbed, right there in the middle of the road.

    Thanks for this slice!

  3. How cool it is I get to know you and learn from you all while reading and slicing with you. This one was really powerful. Whatever March 22nd used to mean or does or doesn’t, I hope you have peace in your soul. You deserve it ❤️

  4. Thanks for always being vulnerable and honest in your writing. It was so great to spend some time chatting at lunch today in person. Hugs to you on this journey you have been navigating.

  5. this sucks. I’m sorry. Big hugs to you. Soon you will feel all of the love. But it S U C K S. How can you write suck a vivid post at this terrible time??????? Just think…. One day you won’t WANT March 22 to mean much anymore!! #morelovetocome

  6. There are so many lines I love in this poem! The way Alanais’s song is set up as background music in my head as I read the rest of the poem, the image of the bird, the alliteration of “I wonder, I worry”. The juxtaposition of so many emotions–starting by stating you’re happy……and shifting to worry……and then sounds like really complex emotions at the end. So beautiful.
