March 25 Seems Dreamy, But.

I’m writing every day of March for the Slice of Life Challenge at Two Writing Teachers

I’m trying to write at a bookstore.
Seems like a dreamy idea on this dreary day.

But.

It’s crowded and this chair isn’t uncomfortable.
I’m in the middle – it’s the table I had to choose
I feel like everyone can see what I’m writing.

My chai latte came in a giant frothy mug.
Seems like a dreamy idea on this dreary day.

But.

It’s a little awkward to hold and hot.
I’m afraid I’m going to spill it.
It’s going to get cold so fast, I think.

Music is playing, and people are chatting.
Seems like a dreamy idea on this dreary day.

But.

I’m a little distracted by a few of the conversations.
The ones closest to me are hard to ignore.
Every other song is somehow obnoxious.

I’m trying to write at a bookstore.
Seems like a dreamy idea on this dreary day.

  1. Sounds like the old Barns and Noble dilemma to me. During my home renovation when I was displaced for 6 week, I TRIED to work from my local B&N…it was tough…my daughter’s basement was better sitting between the toy kitchen set and the ginormous TV!

  2. I agree with Anita! I thought first thing about the so called cafe in Barnes & Noble. I’m sorry you’re unable to focus while writing in a seemingly dreamy environment.

I love how you structured today’s slice, particularly the “But.”

  3. This post had me laughing because I could relate so well! The details you select bring this scene to life. It does seem like a wonderful writerly idea to sit and write in a bookstore, but there are so often discomforts and distractions. Still, it worked because you got this excellent slice out of it!

  4. The repetition really works here. It’s like you are convincing yourself to stay and the reason why you went. Seemed like a good idea…. but the reality… was different.

  5. I feel like I’m sitting right there with you. I’m picturing B&N but maybe you’re at Websters. I could never concentrate in those places. The big hangout when I was in college was the Roy Rodgers – no Starbucks or B&N back then. I never understood it. Who could get anything done sitting in those plastic molded chairs? Despite your surroundings your slice is dreamy.

  6. Ona, what an interesting form you chose today. “Seems dreamy but…” Lots of dreamy things happening, but some things could have been better. You did a good job conveying these things. I would love to be enjoying that chai latte right now!
